Someone Joined my Business!! NOW WHAT?

You’ve been trying for months to build your mlm business. You’ve studied the masters, refined your technique, built your list. Finally, after months of trying, YOU DID IT! Someone joined your network marketing company.

So now that you’re officially a Sponsor (don’t you love that word?) what do you do to get your new recruit off to the best possible start? How can you be an A+ sponsor?

Getting your new recruit started right is important. If they don’t see progress, most people will quit within the first 3 months.

There are so many things to teach your new affiliate. They need to learn about your products, your company, how to give a good presentation, how to advertise….

But let’s start at the beginning. Why did they join your mlm company? Was it to make money? To retire early? To pay off debts? Get them focused on refining their “Why.” This is what will keep them going when the inevitable hard times come.

They also need to focus on their goals. What do they want to accomplish with their network marketing business? Do they want to become the largest distributorship in their area? Or do they want to think globally? Maybe they aren’t concerned with the number of people in their organization, but are more concerned with the volume that moves through it.

Probably the most valuable thing you can do for your new recruit is to contact them every day for their first 30 days. Help them develop their Why and their Goals, but also help them stay focused on the important things: talking to people. Have them answer the following questions every day, it will help you help them:

1. What did you do for your business today? What was the
result?
2. What problems/challenges came up?
3. What questions
do you have for me?

Use their answers to develop a plan for the next day and to build their skills.

Remember, stay focused on how you can help them succeed. The more they succeed, the more you will too! That’s the beauty of Network Marketing.

What's Bugging You?

Do you remember the last time this happened?

You’re on vacation, taking a long drive to the coast. The radio is playing your favorite song, the day is clear and sunny beyond anything you’ve ever seen. The view out your windshield takes your breath away! You think to yourself, “This is the PERFECT day!”

SPLAT!!!

A giant, juicy bug splatters on your windshield, directly in your line of sight.

For several seconds your attention is riveted to the bug juice in front of you. Revolting as it is, you can’t take your eyes off it.

Suddenly you remember you’re traveling 70mph down the curvy highway. You quickly return your focus to the road, barely managing to maneuver the curve you’re approaching.

So how does bug juice relate to MLM?

Remember how you felt when you first learn about multi-level marketing? You saw the possibilities, you caught the vision. The scenery was breathtaking !

SPLAT!!!

A big juicy bug splatters on your windshield. You’ve hit an obstacle you feel is insurmountable. You take your eyes off your vision and put them on the bug juice. The more you stare at the bug juice, the bigger it seems to get!

Before long, you totally lose sight of your vision. All you see is bug juice. You lose hope of ever reaching your goal. You give up.

My friend, take your eyes off the bug! Maybe things ARE rough right now. That’s normal. Network marketing is a difficult industry. But refocus your eyes on the road ahead so you can maneuver the curves in the road. The bug in your MLM vision will take care of itself in time.

To YOUR success!

Bypass the “Salesman Alarm”

We’ve all heard it. The “salesman alarm.” It goes off every time we enter a used car lot or appliance store. No matter how friendly and helpful the “salesman” is, we know they’re out for one thing – the sale.

Now that you’ve joined an MLM company, you may be tempted to turn into a salesman. After all, you’re in the business of moving product, right?

But do you realize that 90% of the population HATES to be “sold” on something?

So how do you move product without selling?

How about getting people to ask YOU about your products instead of you chasing folks down and telling THEM about it? It’s the difference between being the hunter and the hunted.

People hate being “hunted” but they love to hunt! We love to hunt for bargains at the store and get an unbelievable price on that new “toy” (that 52” plasma TV you’ve had your eye on!).

So how do we get prospects to hunt us down and ask about our MLM company’s product?

How about mind control?

I’m not joking!

Next time you’re speaking with a potential customer, try this technique. Just casually work it into the conversation, then wait for them to take the bait. If they’re interested, they’ll bite. If not, they won’t. Either way, NO REJECTION for you!

Here’s how it works:

Pick a benefit you want to tell your potential customer/prospect about your company. Just a tiny one – not the whole enchilada!

Now pick two undisputable facts related to the benefit.

Plug them into these sentences:

Undisputable Fact #1: _______________________

Undisputable Fact #2: _______________________

But some (people/women/men, etc.) have
found: _________________________________________
A few rules for this formula:
Use a TINY bit of information. Keep it short

Avoid asking questions – it puts people on the defensive

Don’t exaggerate. It triggers the salesman alarm every time!

Use 3rd party (not “you” or “I”)

Use small words. Salesmen use big fancy words.
Normal people use short words.
Here are some examples:
“Women like wrinkle-free skin, and winter is so hard on skin! But some women have found a way to keep wrinkles away an extra 20 years”

“Energy drinks & coffee wear off fast then leave you more tired than before. But some people have found a way to have all-day energy without stimulants or drugs.”

“Stay-at-home moms lead busy lives. Most want to contribute to the family budget. Some moms have found a way to earn more working part time than their
husbands do working full time.”
What’s your potential customer/prospect going to do? They can’t help themselves. They’ll ask, “Oh really? How does that work?”

There ya’ go! You just became the hunted. Now that you’ve been invited to give your presentation, get after it!

Mind Over Mood - It’s a “Matter” of What You Think

Mind Over Mood - It’s a “Matter” of What You Think

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, MLM is HARD WORK. Anyone who says otherwise is lying – or worse, clueless!

In order to be truly successful in network marketing, we have to wear many hats: business builder, salesman, coach, accountant, internet marketer, advertising agent, and on and on.

Discouragement is inevitable.

So what do we do when faced with discouragement? Do we allow it to take over our lives, or do we do something to combat it?

Hopefully you are blessed with an upline who genuinely Cares about You. One who, upon receiving a cry for help, with pick up the phone and give you just a few minutes of their precious time to help you calm down and refocus on your Why.

But what if, like many in MLM, your upline simply says you’re not worth their time and to leave them alone? Now what?

Unfortunately this happens all the time in our industry. I firmly believe that’s the biggest reason so many people fail in this industry. They have no support, so when the inevitable discouragement sets in, they have no one to help them out of the pit of despair.

The good news is that you CAN learn to pull yourself out of despair. You see, there’s a Life Principle that we all must live by. That is the principle of “Where the Mind Goes, the Mood Follows.”

Think about that statement for a moment.

Where the Mind Goes the Mood Follows.

Think about the first time you fell in love. Do you remember it? Do you remember how your heart raced at the thought of your beloved? Do you remember the anticipation of seeing them again? Do you remember the electric shiver that scurried up your arm the first time you held hands?

How do you feel?

Probably pretty good.

Do you see how your mood just followed your mind?

We can take ourselves in the opposite direction just by focusing on something negative. But why would you want to??

Every day we’re faced with a choice. “Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice between life and death, between prosperity and disaster.” Deuteronomy 30:15. We can choose Life and Prosperity or Death and Disaster, simply by choosing what we focus on.

Choose well.

M-L-M companies have found a way to steal your paycheck!

Ever feel like this young lady when your "bonus" check arrives?

>

In an earlier post I said:

"THE MOST IMPORTANT THING! Read your Policy and Procedures Guide!
Hopefully you read it before signing up; after all it is a legally binding
contract. But if you didn’t, now is the time!

"My mentor gave me a fabulous tip: most contracts have the real "gotchas" at the end. So what does that tell you? READ BACKWARDS! That’s right, read
Section 10, then Section 9, etc. That way your brain is fresh for the hard
stuff. By the time you get to the fluff at the beginning, your tired brain will
still understand.

"Another tip I learned is that the longer the Policy and Procedures, the more “gotchas”
you’ll likely encounter. If your contract is more than 6-8 pages, set aside
sufficient time to carefully review it."

So why is it important to review your network marketing company's policies and procedures? Because of ONE tiny word - termination.

Ok, so it's not all that tiny a word, but it is VITAL to your ongoing success. You see, many mlm companies include sections like this one taken from an actual company's Policy and Procedures. (note that this is way down in Section 10!):

10.3. Agreement terminable at will

"You may terminate your relationship with XXXX at any time by providing a signed written notice to XXXX. XXXX may also terminate the relationship with you (including any partnerships, corporations or other entity) at any time by providing written notice. You or XXXX are not required to have any reason, nor do you or XXXX have to claim or prove any cause to terminate this relationship. If and when the relationship is terminated, you shall have no claim against XXXX nor any right to claim or collect lost profits, lost opportunities or any other damages. Termination will result in the loss of all benefits as an XXXX Independent Consultant. No promises or assurances have been made to you that the relationship will continue for any particular or specified period or term, or that you will ultimately attain, achieve or realize any or all of the success or benefits of the opportunity made available by XXXX.

Wow.

"Oh, but that's in all MLM company policies," you say.

"Oh no it isn't!" I say!

This "termination for any reason" language leaves the door open for the company to terminate any distributor they want to.

Why would they want to do that? Well, let's say the company is publicaly traded.
When this is the case, who is the company obligated to please? You got it; the share holders.

Let's say stock prices are down, so the share holders are getting nervous. The quickest way to get profits up is to steal them from the top distributors. That's right. Kick out your top distributor(s) then all those profits go directly into the company's pocket. Happens all the time in less scrupulous companies.

So take time right now to review your network marketing company's policy and procedures document to make sure your safe.

Need help deciphering the "legalese?" Just drop me a note or give me a call. I'm here to help!

Case Study – How NOT to do MLM

Some of you may have heard about the troubles USANA is having right now. I recently came across an excellent article on Kim Klaver’s blog about some of the things USANA reps have stated. Her original post is here, along with many insightful comments.

Here’s what she has to say:

USANA looks even worse now...

In this short interview Barry Minkow did with two USANA reps, the recruiters look like predators. The interesting story is what Jane and her husband have to say. Check out the five things Jane's sponsor told her (and withheld from her) that are getting everyone's attention. Are you saying any of these things?

When Jane's neighbor signed her up she told her (according to Jane):

1. Buy not one, but three business centers. Else you're not serious about making big money. Three gets you to 20% commission instead of 10%. (Get the BIG package.)

2. The way to make the money was to recruit others, not get customers. Jane herself says the products were too expensive to get customers.

3. It's her fault if she doesn't succeed.Jane's sponsor didn't tell her that it's not easy...She...

4. didn't tell Jane that most people don't earn commissions (87%, according to USANA's documentation, very common in other companies). Most reps who signed up are just wholesale customers now (according to USANA's own VP here.) We all know how hard it is to make money first hand, don't we?

5. didn't tell Jane that very few people make the big money. Most of the money - 6% of the commisions paid to USANA distributors- goes to 2.6% of them, according to their SEC filings reviewed by Minkow.

(Mr. Minkow is an uncomfortable interviewer. He did time for fraud in the 1980s. He has, however, like many people, changed his ways in recent years and is today helping the government undercover fraud.)

Here's the video:

Jane's story plays out in way too many companies. Here's how to make sure you don't encourage this.

Let people start small and build up.
Tell them the truth - that it's not easy.

Yes, doing that will reduce the numbers of (unqualified) people coming in - and those recruiting commissions you and the company receive - but it will also increase our retention rates and our reputation.

Think?
